This activity is one of my favourite listening/speaking exercises. It is so entertaining!
You can do it in many ways, but I will explain just the two of them.
Numero Uno
Put students into pairs. Each person from the pair receives a slip of paper with expression written on it (it can be a simple sentence as “I love pancakes!” or you can use movie quotes (head to the bottom of the article for some popular quotes you can use). Then both students have some time to either prepare a short story or an idea for a dialogue where they will put the phrase. BUT they need to do it in such a way so that their partner won’t notice the expression.
When A’s are talking, B’s are trying to figure out which sentence, expression, etc. is the hidden one.
Numero Dos
Again put students into pairs, but this time they will work together rather than individually as in the previous version. This variation of the game is very similar to the one I described before, but it’s taken to a bigger scale. Each pair gets ONE slip of paper with the phrase and has to build a short dialogue (can be a story if you prefer) around it. Once again their task is to conceal the phrase so that make it harder for the rest of the students to guess what is the hidden phrase. Pairs gets points for:
-guessing the hidden phrase
-hiding the phrase so that nobody could say what it was
The pair with most points wins!
Quotes ideas:
“I drink your milkshake!” (from There will be blood)
“Good Morning, Vietnam" (from Good morning, Vietnam),
“I am your father” (from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)
“May the force be with you” (from Star Wars)
“To infinity and beyond!” (form Toy Story)
“There’s no crying in baseball!” (from A League of Their Own)
“My mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.”(from Forrest Gump)
